LONGINUS
The male figure in this composition is Longinus. Longinus was the Roman centurion who pierced Christ in His side with the Holy Lance. It is believed that Longinus was partially blind, however, after piercing Jesus Christ in the side, some of the blood mixed with water dropped in the eyes of Longinus. It was then that Longinus miraculously regained his full eyesight, and upon laying his eyes on Christ, he was prompted to make the utterance, “. . . Truly, this man was the Son of God.” Longinus was then converted to Christianity and after his death, he was later on canonized into sainthood. |
