Liberal Arts (Latin.  Artes Liberales)

Disciplines in art whose purpose is to train the freeman.  The seven liberal arts are: Grammar, Oratory, Dialectic, Arithmetic, Music, Geometry, and Astronomy.

 

Logic (Latin. Logica, Greek. Logike)

The science or branch of knowledge that deals with reasoning.

 

Longinus St.(It. Longino)

The soldier who plunged a spear in the side of Christ.  It is said that some of the blood and water mixture fell in his eyes and he regained his full eyesight.  He then abandoned his military post and served in the Christian church.  Later on when Emperor Tiberius Caeser heard of this, he ordered his head to be cut off and Longinus died a martyr.

 

Lucretius (Titus Lucretius Carus 99BC – 55 BC)

Roman poet and author of the epic De Rerum Natura (On the Nature of Things).

 

Martial Eagle (Latin. Hieraaetus bellicosus)

A bird of prey that belongs to the raptor family.  The Martial Eagle is the largest of all African eagles and is capable of catching a young antelope.

 

Mea Culpa (Engl. Through my fault)

A formal admission of one’s fault or mistake. Admitting one’s bad judgment or personal shortcomings.

 

Mercy (Fr. Merci)

Extending leniency or kindness to the offender.  Mercy is one of the virtues that emanates from Divine Love or Charity.  Charity is the embodiment of four more virtues which are:  Grace, Mercy, Clemency and Leniency.

 

Metamorphosis (Greek. Metamorphosis)

A supernatural change in physical form or state, and the final state is permanent.

 

Music (Latin.  Musica, Greek. Mousike)

The art of producing harmonious sounds and tones with rhythm, melody and continuity.  Music is one of the seven liberal arts.

 

New Life (Latin. Vita Nuova)

Dante’s first book that was written by him about his love for Beatrice, the woman whom he fell madly in love with and remained loyal to all his life.  It is believed he was inspired to pursue writing after his life was changed by her.

 

Ode (Greek. Oide)

A complex song or lyric poem that is epic in nature and has variation in style, stanza form, and verse.
