GLOSSARY
Charity (Latin. Caritas) The most beautiful of all virtues. Generosity and unconditional love shown to those in need. Benevolence and the love of humanity.
Cherubim (Greek. Cheroub, Hebrew. Kerubh) The second highest rank of angels in the celestial hierarchy. The highest in the celestial order are seraphim. Cherubs and seraphim are the closest to God and are always in His presence. The celestial hierarchy, beginning with the highest ranking, is in the following nine orders: seraphim, cherubim, thrones, dominions, virtues, powers, principalities, archangels, and angels.
Celestial (Latin. Caelestis) The realm of the atmosphere that is associated with the heavens.
Contrapposto (Engl. Counter-pose) To pose in a contrasting position, where one part of the body is turned in a direction opposite the other. Mostly used in Greek classical antiquity and Renaissance, but perfected by the Baroque virtuosos.
Corinth An ancient cosmopolitan Greek city, and the capital of the Roman province of Achaia. Corinth was noted for its thriving commerce, proud culture, hedonism, and variety of religions.
Dialectic (Latin. Dialectica, Greek. Dialektike) Reasoning, discussing and debating by the use of dialogue to explore and expose intellectual beliefs or internal ideas.
Dante Alighieri (1265 – 1321) Famous for his Divine Comedy, Dante was a prose writer and moral philosopher who was born in Florence. Another one of his works was Vita Nuova (New Life). Epistle (Latin. Epistula, Greek. Epistole) A dignified and gracefully written composition normally in form of a letter.
Faith (Latin. Fides) To hope for that which the human eyes can’t see, with a firm conviction that it will come to pass. One of the seven virtues associated with Hope and Love.
Four elements (Latin. Speculum naturale) The natural substance that is celebrated in art. These are: water, wind earth, and fire.
