AUGUSTINE
St. Augustine to the far right is seen carrying a book with some of his writings. He is also kneeling down as a sign of submission to The Virtues. On the left shoulder of Augustine’s drapery is a badge of Africa, where he was born in the town of Hippo.
Both Augustine and Athanasius proudly display these symbols to celebrate their African heritage. In the un-cropped rendition of this composition above St. Augustine are four of the virtues namely: Prudence, Fortitude, Temperance, and Providence. Each one of them expresses a different passion of the soul. |
