ATHANASIUS

Athanasius too was born in North Africa in the city of Alexandria.  He was a very respected Doctor of the Church and is referred to as one of the four Church Fathers.  His influence went beyond Europe and North Africa. In The Virtues Unveiled I talk more about the allegorical meaning behind this drawing. 

There are eight figures in this composition, each of which has a symbolic meaning. The dramatic movement and emotionalism displayed is meant to give more life to the figures.  He is shown gazing toward the virtues which are directly above him.
