AMBROSE
In the middle St. Ambrose is shown staring in shocked silence toward the virtues. As an artist I always seek balance in my renderings. In this particular one all the four Church fathers are elderly and the virtues are youthful. It is a celebration of youth and age.
All the figures are in harmony with each other and the allegorical themes offer insight into how I compose my drawings. A drawing has to have a theme behind it. Once I have a theme, I then start sketching the initial illustration that will be used. I had wanted to include Lucretius, Virgil, Horace, and Ovid in this composition, but I thought I would reserve that for some other time. |
